Quick Make: Chunky Crochet Hat

Hi there! The weather here in the L.A. area has finally gotten crisp and chilly. Yippee!!!!! And since I’m on a “quick craft” role over here on my side of the craft and crochet world, I decided to make this super fast and easy hat for myself, last night.

The hat, from start to finish, took me two episodes of On-Demand “Game of Thrones ” to make. So a teeny bit under two hours to make. I chose my viewing selection of “Game Of Thrones” because 1. I’m one of those GOT fans that can not wait to get my fix in February when season 7 premieres on HBO and the main reason 2. “Winter is Coming” (You all see what I did there? Nice, huh?) so need a hat to keep me warm. Besides the warmth factor, I think the hat is made super adorable with the giant Mint Pom on top. You think Jon Snow would wear one if I made him one? Squeeeee!

Love2Bloom Quick Make Crochet Chunky Hat Pattern

I’m digressing. Sorry. Back to crochet. Ahem.

The quickness of the making was in large part due to the yarn I used, which was a very bulky thick yarn, one very similar to Lions Brand Thick and Chunky and to the hook I used, a size “N”  hook.

With all that said, let’s get to it.

Chunky Crochet Hat

Materials:

Thick and Chunky yarn, I used a winter white color (one skein)

Thinner Yarn in a contrasting color, I used a minty green

“N” size crochet hook

Tapestry sewing needle

Extra large pom maker by Clover

Crochet It!

Note: Ribbing will be made by crocheting in back loops only throughout project.

With yarn and hook, leave a 16 inch tail of yarn and chain 34 + 2 . The extra 2 stitches count as your first half double crochet (hdc).

Row 1: Hdc in each stitch across, Ch. 2, turn.

Row 2:  Working in back loops only, hdc in each stitch across.

Repeat Row 2 until you have between 25 – 35 rows, depending on size you are working for.  For my head, I made mine 32 rows.  Adjust and measure as you work.

Once you have the correct size, you’ll have a sort of square or rectangle like shape. Whether square or rectangle, fold work lengthwise and single crochet (sc) sides close. You’ll have what looks like a ridged tube.

On one end of the “tube” without the 16 inch tail, sc around, join to beginning stitch and fasten off.  This is the brim, which you will fold up, if you wish. Not folding it up, will result in a more slouchy fit. Crocheters choice.

On the other end, with the 16 inch tail,  thread the yarn tail through the tapestry needle and with a loose stitch, close the end shut. Pull the end of the yarn to tighten the top of the hat into a sort of circle. Secure end and fasten off.

Turn rightside out. Using the thinner yarn and the Clover extra large pom pom maker, make the hat its’ pom. NOTE: When you tie the pom together, make sure to leave a yarn tail long enough for tying onto the hat. Once your pom is made, secure on top of hat.

Wear warmly and Enjoy!

x-o,

Mona
